M1A Yenikapı – Atatürk Airport is the first rail system operation of Metro Istanbul. The line that constitutes the first part of the M1 operation starts from the Yenikapı integration region, passes through the Bayrampaşa region and reaches the Otogar. Following the direction of Merter, M1A Line passing through Zeytinburnu and extending to Atatürk Airport connects the Suriçi region to the airport.

Haliç Station is located on the Golden Horn Metro Bridge. All other stations were constructed as tunnel/underground stations. In the system, which has 4 middle platforms and 10 side platforms, Yenikapı Station was constructed with 3 roads – 2 middle platforms and Sanayi Mahallesi Station 3 roads – 3 side platforms.

  • System Safety and Security

Scenarios have been prepared against all kinds of negative situations in the enterprise and solution plans have been prepared by making simulations about these scenarios. With cameras located in each region of the stations, the system is continuously monitored and controlled. In addition, uniformed security guards are in charge.

The entire system is equipped with the latest technology fire alarm detectors and fire extinguishing systems. All equipment used in the construction of the system are selected from materials which are resistant to high temperature and do not emit toxic gases in case of combustion. In order to evacuate passengers safely in case of fire, there is a smoke control and evacuation system which has been tested according to all scenarios and has been proven to be reliable.

The line’s signaling, switch, and vehicle system is fully automatic and can be operated manually if needed.

The energy supply of the system is provided from two separate points. If both feed points fail, generators are activated within 15 seconds and all trains in the tunnel can reach the nearest station and evacuate their passengers. In case of failure of energy supplies and failure of generators; lighting and electronic control systems can be supplied by uninterruptible power supplies for 3 hours.

Passengers traveling to Ziya Gökalp District and Olympiyat directions should transfer from İkitelli Sanayi Station!

The construction of the line between Kirazlı Station and Başakşehir / Metrokent stations started in 2006. There is a transfer option from Ikitelli Sanayi Station in the direction of the Olimpiyat Station to the Seyrantepe Station. There are 11 stations in the line which is about 16 km in length. In addition, the Olimpiyat campus has a storage area and workshop building.

The stations have platforms of 180 meters long which allow operation by octal (8) trains. Mahmutbey Station is built with an additional 3rd road that allows car parking. The Olympiyat Station was constructed with 2 platforms – 3 lines and 2 middle platforms and 4 lines that allow transfer in the concave floor of Ikitelli Sanayi Station. All stations of the line were constructed as tunnel/underground stations.

The workshop and warehouse area in the Olympiyat campus is built on an area of approximately 70,000 m² and has a capacity of 120 vehicles. The workshop building with maintenance units consists of 10.000 m² closed area.

Line tunnels are double tubed. Kirazlı – Başakşehir / Metrokent line was opened by the TBM method where İkitelli Sanayi – Olympiyat line was opened by the NATM method.

The first stage of the line was completed in 2012 and opened to service with 16 stations in the 21.7 km section between Kadıköy and Kartal. With the construction of Yakacık-Adnan Kahveci, Pendik and Tavşantepe stations, the second stage of the line was completed. With the second stage, the length of the line increased to 26.5 km and the number of stations increased to 19.

The line sits on the D100 route in the Acıbadem area starting from Kadıköy and follows this route up to Tavşantepe. There is a warehouse with a capacity of 52 vehicles (13 trains) and a maintenance workshop with a total capacity of 32 vehicles on the line between Maltepe and Huzurevi stations and in the Maltepe Station area. The entire line, including warehouse and workshop sites, was constructed underground.

Tunnels of the line between Kadıköy – Kozyatağı and Kartal – Kaynarca was built by TBM method; where the line between Kozyatağı – Kartal was excavated by NATM method. Bostanci Station has an additional rail line and two side platforms considering the need for alternative operation. All other stations were built as side platforms. The length of the station is 180 meters and it is suitable for 8-train operation. There are 259 escalators and 70 elevators in the facility. Access is provided through 315 turnstiles, 30 of which are designed to allow the passage of disabled passengers.

  • System Safety and Security

Smoke and passenger evacuation scenarios have been prepared against the negative situations that may occur in M4 Kadıköy – Tavşantepe Metro Line and simulations related to these scenarios have been tested. A total of 991 cameras in the stations are continuously monitored and controlled and inspections done by security guards.

The signaling of the line and the storage area has a constant communication-based Mobile Block system. The signaling system is the Thales CBTC system and trains have the option of driverless parking.

All equipment used in the construction of the line is selected from materials that are highly heat resistant and do not emit toxic gases. To ensure the evacuation of passengers in the shortest time and safely in case of fire; a reliable smoke control and evacuation systems are available which can operate fully automatic, and comply with NFPA compliant standards.

At Kadıköy – Tavşantepe Metro Line, the energy supply of the whole system is provided from 3 different points. In case of failure of all three supply points, generators at 2 separate ends are activated. With the activation of the generators, all trains in the tunnel are delivered to the nearest station and the passengers are evacuated. In case of failure of supply of energy and failure of generators; lighting system and electronic control systems can be supplied by uninterruptible power supplies for 3 hours.

M5 Üsküdar-Cekmekoy Line is the second metro line on the Asian side, as well as the first driverless metro line of Turkey. Starting from Üsküdar Square, the line passes through Ümraniye district center and ends at Çekmeköy Square.

The line, which has a high passenger potential on the route it is built, is planned to be extended to Sultanbeyli and Kurtköy regions with the works carried out within the framework of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality rail systems future vision.

Tunnels of the line were excavated by TBM and NATM method. All stations were built underground. The length of the station is 140 meters (150 meters at Üsküdar Station) and it is suitable for 6 wagon train operation. All of the stations have special entrance turnstiles and elevators for disabled access and escalators for other passengers. Access to the concave floor (turnstile floor) from the entrance area is provided only by elevators, and from the concave floor (turnstile floor) to the platform floor by both elevators and escalators. Since UTO is operated fully automatic (without a driver), all platforms have PAKS (Platform Separator Door System).

M6 Metro Line provides access to Boğaziçi University and Hisarüstü area for passengers arriving via M2 Yenikapı – Haciosman Metro Line. M6 Metro Line, which was built by the new Austrian Tunneling (NATM) method and as a single tube tunnel, is different from other metro lines with this structure.

In the system which is built on a single rail line, trains pass through the station areas and in other areas only one vehicle travels in the same direction due to the construction technique.

The first phase of the line was built between Sirkeci and Aksaray and opened in 1992. The line, which is connected to Topkapı and Zeytinburnu directions, was later extended to Eminönü Station. On 29 June 2006, it was connected to Kabataş by crossing the Galata Bridge.

In the Kabataş area, it is connected to M2 Yenikapı Hacıosman Metro Line via F1 Taksim – Kabataş Funicular Line, thus providing transportation between 4th Levent and Atatürk Airport by rail systems. All stations of the T2 Zeytinburnu – Bağcılar Line, which was commissioned in 2006 and operated by high-floor tram vehicles, were aligned with low-floor trams at the end of one week only and were joined with the T1 Line on 3 February 2011. This work provides direct rail transportation from Bağcılar to Kabataş.

Line T3 partially follows the route of the old tram line 20. It runs through Kadıköy Square, Altıyol and Bahariye Street, in front of Moda Elementary School and again from Moda Street in front of Kadıköy İDO Pier and works as a ring company. The system, which is made with the one-way operation, serves with Tatra GT6 model tram cars purchased from Jena, Germany as second hand. The line is also referred to as the Nostalgic Tram Line because it uses the route of the old tram line 20 and utilizes nostalgic vehicles. All maintenance, repair, and revision of these vehicles is done at tram maintenance workshop which is located near Kadıköy-IDO Station.

T4 Tram Line was established to transport the passenger traffic of Sultançiftliği and Gaziosmanpaşa regions to important transfer points and to ease the traffic of the region. The line, which was put into service between Şehitlik and Mescid-i Selam stations on September 17, 2007, passed through Edirnekapı and Vatan regions and reached Topkapı. The total length of the line reached 15.3 kilometers with the Şehitlik – Topkapı stage, which was put into service on 18 March 2009.

The line, where high-floor tram vehicles are used, passes through Sultangazi, Gaziosmanpaşa, Bayrampaşa and Eyüp Sultan districts. Stations of the line with a capacity of 25,000 passengers in one direction per hour are designed to operate in triple arrays.

The T4 line is operated by high-floor tram vehicles, so all platforms are built high. There are ramps for the access of disabled and elderly passengers in the stations and elevators and escalators in the underground stations.

There are a total of 22 stations in the system, 7 of which are underground, 1 on the viaduct and 14 on the surface.

Transfer centers are being established at many points in order to ensure integration in Istanbul urban transportation and to shorten transportation times. Kabataş region is one of the points where different modes of transportation are integrated with each other. Taksim – Kabataş Funicular Project was planned to integrate sea, land and rail transportation and the system was opened on 29 June 2006.

  • Station Structures

The Taksim Station of the system is built in the same complex as M2 Taksim Station. All of the technical equipment that controls the system and provides the movement is located in this station.

Kabataş Station was built under the sea level. There is a difference of 70 meters between the station which is 16 meters below the sea level and Taksim Station. The 22.19% slope between the two stations is smoothly overcome by the pulling of the wired system controlled by the mechanical system at Taksim Station utilizing the counterweight principle.
