Located in the heart of the world, Istanbul is easily accessible by air.
How many airports there are in Istanbul? The city has two international airports: Istanbul Ataturk Airport on the European side and the Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the Asian side.
In this guide, you can find general information about airports, transportation to the airport, nearby hotels, what you can do during delays, where you can eat and drink.
Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport Guide
Sabiha Gokcen was the first woman pilot of Turkey and the first woman combat pilot in the World during the late 30’s that the airport is named after. She was also one of the stepdaughters of Ataturk and lived between 1913-2001.
With the constant growth of arrivals and air traffic, there has been the need for a new airport for Istanbul. Because of the logistics and public demand, the Asian side of the city was chosen for this task.
The construction was started in 1998 and finished in September 2000 with two runways. A private company, HEAS, is running the airport today under the regulations of DHMI (State Airports Authority).

The airport is located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul at Kurtkoy in Pendik district, at a distance of 12 kilometers to Pendik, 40 kilometers to Kadikoy, and 50 kilometers to Taksim Square.
It’s also only 10 minutes away from Istanbul Park Formula 1 race circuit. With the new international terminal built in October 2009, the airport now has a capacity of 25 million passengers per year.
Inside the terminals, there are CIP and VIP lounges, Duty-Free shops, bars and cafeterias, pubs and restaurants, a hotel, post office, bank, emergency medical service, rent-a-car, car parks, etc. There are many taxis and shuttle bus service to the city.
The international airport code is SAW. The airport is open 24 hours.
Whether you have a layover, overnight sleepover or you are just quickly passing through, our Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport Guide is a great place to start planning your visit.

Here, you’ll find information on services and facilities available inside the airport – including details about airport lounges, WiFi, mobile charging points, lockers, 24-hour food options, nearby hotels, and everything in between.
Airport Overview
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, we are here to give you the low-down on what travelers have reported back to us about their time at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.
What to Expect
Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport is a modern single terminal facility with a decent selection of airside and landside shops and eateries, some offering 24-hour service.
While the terminal is new, service is described as disorganized, inefficient and chaotic, with long, slow lines, likely due in part to overall under the capacity of Istanbul’s airports. WiFi is available to help pass the time.
For comfort, while you wait, economy class passengers can pay to use one of the first-class airport lounges. See our Airport Lounges section for locations and rates.

Where to Sleep
Departure areas and gates are described by reviewers as being the best spots for finding a sleeping spot. Most seats have armrests, but some benches in the departures lounge are said to have moveable armrests.
While sleeping on the floor in the airport is reportedly against the rules, several reviewers noted that authorities did not bother them when they slept on carpeted areas in the international departures area or in empty gate areas. As noise and bright lighting were cited as biggest sleep disturbers, earphones/noise-canceling headphones and eyeshade are recommended.

For uninterrupted sleep, there is a hotel at the airport, and some others just a quick shuttle ride away. See Airport Hotels in the airport guide below.
In this guide, we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.

Istanbul Airport Guide
The construction of the third airport started in 2015 with the scope of building a large airport in order to handle growing air traffic as Istanbul becoming an important hub for travelers and international airlines.
The first phase of the project had a soft opening on the 29th of October 2018 and this airport moved completely from Ataturk airport to prevent route heavy air traffic in 2019.

When all phases will be completed until 2027, it will be the largest airport in Europe with 6 runways and a capacity of 200 million passengers per year.
The project is run by a consortium called IGA, who will hold the managing rights of the airport for 25 years and they will deliver it to the Turkish State.
The airport is located 35 kilometers north of the city center (Taksim Square), by the shores of the Black Sea. It has a capacity of 20 million passengers per year.
Inside the Airport terminals there will be a hotel with a total of 451 rooms for overnight and hourly accommodation, several international and local restaurants, cafeterias and bars, a huge Duty Free area, several CIP – VIP and other lounges, a huge car park, several kiosks, conference halls, left baggage, hairdresser, photography service, shoe shiners, newsstands, grocery, florist, medical services, pharmacy, rent-a-cars, travel agents, airline ticket offices, banking offices and ATM’s etc.
There are many taxis, shuttle bus service to the city center, and a light railway (metro) to the city will be completed by 2020.
